Determining behavioural-based risk to SLODs of urban public open spaces: published results!

Effects due to Slow Onset Disasters (SLODs) occurrence in the Urban Built Environment (BE) can affect the users' safety by provoking threats for their health. Squares in historical urban fabric are really relevant in this sense, since their features can increase risks for users during their staying outdoors, and thus indicators to evaluate these aspects are strongly and urgently needed.

A new paper on the matter has been just published on Sustainable Cities and Society (Elsevier), and is now online available. The paper is entitled "Determining behavioural-based risk to SLODs of urban public open spaces: Key performance indicators definition and application on established built environment typological scenarios". The work proposes a methodology that can: (1) Assess heat and air pollution risks in Public Outdoor Spaces in the Built Environment; (2) Define a behavioural-based method for risk assessment exploiting simulation tools; (3) Define behavioural-based Key Performance indicators for heat and air pollution stress. Italian Built Environment Typologies (BETs) are used for method capabilities demonstration, by succeeding in classifying risks in the BETs and quantifying stress for most vulnerable users (i.e. toddlers). By this work, results from WP4, i.e. T4.2 have been deployed to the general audience of researchers.
