Results of the BE S2ECURe project on Built Environment Typologies at risk at Sustainability MDPI!

According to WP3 objectives, the evaluation of recurring features for the open spaces (OSs) in the built environment (BE) is a fundamental step to assess risk scenarios, in terms of single and multi-hazard disasters, plan for preparedness and mitigate damage and increase the resilience of the BE and its users.

Related results on the definition of Built Environment Typologies (BETs) are now available in the new research contribution entitled "Built Environment Typologies Prone to Risk: A Cluster Analysis of Open Spaces in Italian Cities", which has been recently published in the international scientific journal Sustainability MDPI within the "Hazard and Sustainability" section. The paper is now available online here.


Five parameters considered as significant in the scientific literature are collected through GIS data starting from the common characteristics of OSs (i.e., squares). These data are then processed through non-hierarchical cluster analysis. Five groups of OSs, characterized by specific morphological, functional, and physical characteristics, are identified, according to the results of T3.2 activities (i.e. basing on the actions from D3.2.1) Combining the outcomes of the cluster analysis with critical analysis, nine final BETs are identified. The resulting BETs are linked to characteristic risk combinations, according to the analysed parameters. Thus, the multi-risk scenarios identified through the statistical analysis lay the basis for future risk assessments of BEs, thus jumping into WP4 actions.
